Newington Girls' Travel Basketball Day

Date: January 19,2008

Location: Mortensen Community Center, Newington, CT

Coordinator: Rick Bangs, coach of the 8th grade girls

"The event was an overwhelming success. The day was the culmination of a lot of hard work by many many wonderful volunteers. Dean Houldcroft, coach of the 7th grade girls and his wife Alisa, Ed Wojitowicz and his wife Bonnie, Terry Blair, coach of the 6th grade girls and his wife Karen, my parents Terri and George, Newington Parks and Recreation, and all of the organizations that donated prizes.

We held 3 girls' travel games on Saturday, a 6th grade, 7th grade, and 8th grade game. We asked for a $3 donation from adults and $1 from children under 12 to attend the games. While at the gym, we held 3 raffles, one during each game, with prizes ranging from gift cards to local restaurants and jewelry stores, to UConn jackets, golf clubs, ESPN tours, and an autographed UConn Women's basketball. In addition to the basketball and raffles, we also sold candy, pizza (donated by Vito's Pizza and Newington Pizza) as well as hot dogs (donated by Newington Meats). Having done cancer fundraisers at Farmington high school, I was expecting a good turnout, but I could've never predicted how much we would actually make. We raised just over $2,000 for Geno's Cancer Team and the V Foundation!! This event would have never been suck a huge success without the help of all the parents, coaches, players, and organizations involved. It was an honor to be one of the first travel teams in Connecticut to hold such an event. We look forward to holding future Geno's Cancer Team fundraisers!"
